Inside Higher Ed is a small organization - you'll play a lot of roles each week. The company is founded on a collaborative work style - of crucial importance is the ability to communicate well with nontechnical colleagues. Project management skills, including a fundamental sense of accountability and the ability to complete projects quickly and thoroughly, and to document them well, will be high on our priority list as well.

Core duties cover a wide range of day-to-day IT tasks including but by no means limited to:

  1. Maintenance and repair of Redhat Linux servers remotely using SSH (no graphical interface).
  2. Maintenance and repair of Windows 2003 servers.
  3. Maintenance and repair of Windows XP and Vista workstations.
  4. LAMP configuration and maintenance.
  5. Management of VOIP phone system (may work with outside vendors).

You'll join Inside Higher Ed's Web Site Manager to provide day-to-day support and development of the Inside Higher Ed Web site. The ability and willingness to collaborate on projects requiring Web development/design; programming with PHP, Mysql, Javascript and/or Cascading Style Sheets; and a working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator and/or Dreamweaver are key. Experience with content management systems such as EZPublish (Inside Higher Ed's current platform), Joomla, Drupal or similar is highly desirable.

You'll also be responsible for managing Inside Higher Ed's relationships with external vendors, ranging from external server providers to telecom providers to the Web development consulting firm we've collaborated with to develop the site. Successful experience managing projects involving third parties would be highly prized.

Previous successful experience with journalists would be extremely helpful - as would a basic understanding of online marketing. Additional skills/experience/education that would help you succeed in this job include:

  1. Network+ certification or equivalent college training
  2. Postfix (or any email system training)
  3. Cisco training (or at least general phone system familiarity)
  4. Experience management CRM systems (Inside Higher Ed runs SalesForce)
  5. Experience integrating business systems (Quickbooks, CRM, e-mail applications, etc.)
  6. Strong PHP, Mysql, Javascript and Cascading Style Sheets programming skill
  7. Social Media Marketing experience (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
  8. StrongMail training.
  9. Experience with budgeting, strategic planning or other business process experience

The ideal candidate will participate in the process of defining Inside Higher Ed's technical future, as well as the job. Experienced candidates with lots of flexibility and willingness to get their hands dirty are welcome. We are also open to candidates who have the right skill set and ambition, but are still in the relatively early stages of their careers.

Inside Higher Ed is located just steps from the Dupont Circle metro stop (red line) in a vibrant neighborhood. We offer terrific benefits and a collegial, fun work environment. Specific job title and salary are negotiable, depending on experience.

The position is currently open and Inside Higher Ed hopes to make a hire quickly. We'll keep you posted as the search progresses.
